AI Enablement: The Way Ahead Begins With Fit for Purpose

Most organizations do not lack access to AI. They lack a disciplined way to decide where it belongs. Enablement that begins with tools tends to produce scattered pilots, while enablement that begins with the mission produces capabilities that can be governed, funded and sustained.

What fit for purpose means

Fit for purpose AI matches the model, the data, the controls and the operating cost to a defined decision or workflow. A larger model is not automatically a better one. A narrower system, or a non AI solution, may serve the mission with lower risk and lower cost. The test is whether the capability improves a named outcome in a way the organization can verify and oversee.

The way ahead for organizations

  • Define outcomes first: name the decision, the user and the measure of success before selecting technology.

  • Establish governance early: assign accountable owners, keep an inventory of AI supported decisions, and set an approval path proportionate to risk.

  • Prepare data and infrastructure: confirm that data quality, access controls and integration support the intended use.

  • Build workforce capability: train the people who will use, supervise and challenge the system.

  • Pilot narrowly and measure honestly: set exit criteria in advance, including the option to stop.

  • Plan for operations: budget for monitoring, change management and vendor dependency, not only for deployment.

Candid risks and constraints

  • Pilots without named owners create unmanaged risk and cost.

  • Vendor claims about accuracy and savings should be tested against your own data and workflows.

  • Regulatory and contractual obligations vary by sector and jurisdiction; confirm them with qualified counsel.

  • Benefits depend on adoption, which depends on trust and training as much as on technology.

What to do next

Select one workflow in which a decision is made repeatedly, document how it is made today, and assess whether AI is the right instrument. The result gives leadership a factual basis for deciding what to enable, what to defer and what to decline. To discuss scope, submit a consultation request on the Get Started page.
